ALT2020 – CANCELLED

ALT Committee has taken the reluctant decision to cancel this year’s conference, given that many institutions are either banning or advising against domestic travel. They’ve also taken the view that it isn’t possible to postpone it until a later date, having explored the logistics fully.

There will be a further update in due course. That and any other information will be communicated via the website.

Conference Theme: Building Community

Stirling Law School is delighted to host the 2020 Association of Law Teachers’ conference at the Stirling Court Hotel, in the grounds of Stirling University, on Monday 6 April and Tuesday 7 April 2020.

The concept of ‘Building Community’ is deliberately broad. It can cover (for example) building communities within and between students; across disciplines; with colleagues; with legal practice; with different user groups or those with different personal and life experiences. Colleagues are encouraged to think creatively about what it might mean to them, and for their work. The conference will include an informal drinks reception and buffet dinner on Sunday 5 April. The Conference Dinner and Ceilidh will take place on the evening of Monday 6 April.

The conference indicative programme is now available here.

Book for the Association of Law Teachers’ Annual Conference 2020: Early Bird, Standard Rate and Late Booking packages are available, but please note that all bookings for the Conference will close at 5:00pm on Wednesday 1st April 2020.

Proposals are invited for papers and posters to be delivered at the Conference. In addition to the traditional paper presentations, the conference organisers invite papers which focus on sharing our knowledge and experience and supporting those new to teaching law. We therefore welcome proposals for training-type sessions (broadly conceived) and papers from experienced law teachers to pass on tips and tricks.

Submission of Abstracts/Proposals:

Please submit your abstract, session proposal or poster proposal by email to ALT2020@stir.ac.uk by the submission deadline. The call for papers is open until 5:00pm on Friday 14th February 2020. All submissions will be peer reviewed and decisions will be made and communicated no later than Friday 14th February 2020. For the avoidance of doubt, you don’t need to submit anything other than an abstract in the prescribed format unless you wish your work to be considered for one of the prizes.

A template for abstracts for papers is available. Please use it and please note in particular that abstracts should:

  • Be no more than 250 words. Anything longer will be returned for editing
  • Have a title, followed on separate lines by the author(s) names/affiliations and three keywords (for example ‘assessment’, ‘technology’, ‘reflection’)
  • Include a short description of the topic
  • Provide a summary of the argument and the literature upon which it draws
  • Outline the aims of the paper, an indication of how it reflects the conference theme and say what participants can hope to gain from it
  • State clearly at the bottom of the abstract if you do NOT wish your name, email and other contact details to be included in the delegate list.

Abstracts for panels should include:

  • An over-arching title
  • Three separate papers which address the criteria outlined above.

We are aware that drafting conference abstracts can be daunting for those who haven’t done it before. Anyone in that position should do their finest Four Tops impersonation and Reach Out to senior colleagues within their institution for assistance. And please tell us in your email if this is your first conference paper. We will find somebody nice to chair it…

We are particularly keen to receive proposals from those formerly in practice, or who have recently completed the PG Cert, HEA Fellowships or other training processes and wish to share their experiences or research findings.

Poster proposals can be less detailed but must include:

  • The title of the poster
  • A summary of the argument to be presented and the literature upon which it draws
  • An indication of how it reflects the conference theme
  • State clearly at the bottom of the abstract if you do NOT wish your name, email and other contact details to be included in the delegate list.

Posters should be laminated and ideally produced at A2 size (42cm x 60cm). Smaller posters can be accommodated, but not bigger ones. Please let us know the size of your poster so we can organise sufficient poster boards, and please mail your posters to: The ALT Hosts, School of Law, Pathfoot A63, University of Stirling, Stirling FK9 4LA

Posters must reach us no later than Wednesday 1st April 2020. Posters received after this time may not be displayed.

Details regarding prizes are available on the website here: https://altconference2020.stir.ac.uk/prizes/
